In stories such as “The Man Who Was Almost A Man” and “Loaf of Bread”, we learn that selfish motives of greed and hate often end with negative results. For instance, Dave in “The Man Who Was Almost A Man” learns the hard way that having a gun makes him no more of a man than without one. The gun actually made him look more like a fool. Harold Green in “Loaf of Bread” learns how racism is more powerful than money and being a white grocer in a black community. Their rebellions come due to their self-centered thinking, not questioning how others will respond and not caring. The authors prove self-centered ideas lead to complications and problems.
