In a study by Martin and Porter, they address that one of the major problems for the Canadian economy is the fact that in the past “Canada chose the familiar and comfortable path of replication, benchmarking and operational improvement instead of embracing a culture of innovation, uniqueness and differentiation.” This means that in order for Canada to become competitive we need to adopt an innovation driven strategy.
The high tech industry is at the forefront of Canada’s R&D and innovation. In 1999, it accounts for 45.9% of Canada’s R&D, 3.6% of employment and 5.7% of GDP.
