Les Miserables: A Historical Analysis

Life throughout the French Revolution was extremely merciless. The laws were unreasonable and the punishment for breaking such laws was even more so. In the novel Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, the inadequacies of the French society are illustrated through the main characters characteristics, the circumstances they are subject to.
Three of the main characters used to exemplify the imperfections of French society are Javert, Fantine, and M. Thenardier. They are each used to demonstrate two of the inescapable lifestyles one may have had before the French Revolution.
