Mary Higgins Clark was born in New York City on December 24, 1929. She was the middle child and the only girl. Her mother’s name was Nora C. Higgins. Her father’s name was Luke Joseph Higgins. Her mother had been a buyer for B. Altman’s department store in Manhattan. Her father owned and managed the Higgins Bar and Grille. As a child, Clark loved to read.
The Depression era was difficult for the Higgins family. Luke Higgins worked twenty hours a day at his restaurant. In 1939, when Mary Higgins was ten, her father died in his sleep. Leaving his wife with three children and a mortgage. Eventually the family was forced to live in a cramped, three room apartment.
