What is HIV?
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a viral disorder that progressively destroys the white blood cells and causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) eventually results in progressive deterioration of the body’s immune system, allowing infections and certain cancers to develop. AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection and is a fatal illness.
HIV is responsible for the greatest fear of infection among the public and health care providers. The HIV virus attacks and destroys certain white blood cells called T4 lymphocytes.
