Leonardo came from an insignificant background and rose to universal acclaim. Leonardo da Vinci was born April 15, 1452, in the small Tuscan town of Vinci, near Florence, Italy. He was the illegitimate son of a local wealthy notary and a peasant woman. His father acknowledged him and raised him.
