In all books, the main character undergoes many changes in order to better represent one or more of the book’s themes. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the main character, Pip, also goes through major changes. Great Expectations is the story of Pip and his initial dreams and resulting disappointments that eventually lead to him becoming a genuinely good man. Dickens uses Pip’s deterioration from an innocent boy to an arrogant gentleman and his redemption as a good-natured person to illustrate the theme and idea that unrealistic hopes and expectations can lead to undesirable traits.
