This brief essay will attempt to paint an accurate picture of what life in St. Petersburg might have been like in nineteenth century Russia. This picture will be constructed with the aid of two classic nineteenth century literary works; Aleksandr Pushkin’s “The Bronze Horseman” and “The Overcoat” by Nikolay Gogol. As both pieces of literature are set within the city of St. Petersburg they provide remarkable insight not only to what the city may have looked like or how its society interacted but also convey a real feeling for what it must have been like to live in such a place during that time.
