In the story “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” written by Katherine Porter, Granny Weatherall’s name is synonymous with her character. In this stream-of-consciousness narration, she is portrayed as a woman of fortitude, endurance, strength and sensibility, which is shown by her life of raising animals and children on her own, without a husband by her side, doctoring them when sick, and working hard from sun-up until long into the night. This resilient personality is a direct result of being jilted earlier in life. She was unprepared for life as a young woman and as a result was left foolishly standing at the altar. For the rest of her life she would make sure she never would be left standing in that position again.
