Janis Joplin was the first white female blues/rock singer to come out of the ‘60s. Strangely, her lifestyle was equal to many of her male counterparts of the era. She was considered the First Lady of rock and roll. Unfortunately she didn’t have a very long career, dying at only 27. Many say that the period of Janis’s life, just prior to superstardom, was her happiest. Joplin’s rise to the front of rock and roll was sudden and she fell victim to the excesses stardom offered. In a climate of sexual and drug freedom and experimentation, Janis shrugged off the moral and social stigmas for females at the time and indulged openly and excessively in both.
