Oliver Goldsmith was born in Pallas, near Ballymahon, Longford, on October 10, 1730. Soon after his birth his family moved to Kilkenny, where he attended his first school. At 9 he left the Kilkenny School and attended several academies. In 1744 he went to Trinity College in Dublin and struggled to make a living. “His crude manners prevented him from making friends.” (www.theatrehistory.com) College life was miserable for Goldsmith. He graduated in 1749, after his father’s death and went to live with his mother. He searched in areas of his profession for work. He became a tutor but lost the job.
