Oliver Goldsmith was born in Pallas, near Ballymahon, Longford, on October 10, 1730. Soon after his birth his family moved to Kilkenny, where he attended his first school. At 9 he left the Kilkenny School and attended several academies. In 1744 he went to Trinity College in Dublin and struggled to make a living. “His crude manners prevented him from making friends.” (www.theatrehistory.com) College life was miserable for Goldsmith.
