Unknown Organism Identification Report

The purpose of this project was to identify an unknown organism that was inoculated on a nutrient slant. The time limit for this project was roughly two weeks. Through a variety of carefully chosen tests, the student should be able to correctly identify the organism chosen. METHODS AND PROCEDURES On Thursday, July 17th, the first day of this project, unknown organism #17 was chosen and a standard Gram stain was prepared and viewed under the microscope. Then, a four-way streak plate was prepared on EMB agar and incubated at 37 C over the next five days in order to isolate the colonies and find out if the unknown organism would ferment lactose. On Tuesday, July 22nd, a lactose broth was inoculated and incubated for two days in order
