Emphysema is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that gradually narrows a persons lungs, effecting their capability to breathe. Caused by years of inhaling irritating cigarette smoke, emphysema usually shows no signs of it’s damage until a person is at least 50 years old. Men are more at risk of developing this disease for reasons that are not yet fully understood. Male cases of emphysema are 53% more prevalent over female cases. Smokers are ten times more likely to develop the disease over non smokers. Nearly three million people are diagnosed with emphysema in the United States alone. It is estimated that 75,000 deaths occur annually from emphysema related causes.
