Emphysema is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that gradually narrows a persons lungs, effecting their capability to breathe. Caused by years of inhaling irritating cigarette smoke, emphysema usually shows no signs of it’s damage until a person is at least 50 years old. Men are more at risk of developing this disease for reasons that are not yet fully understood. Male cases of emphysema are 53% more prevalent over female cases.
