According to the New York Times on August 22, 2003 ethnic militia waged battles in Nigeria which resulted in the death of one hundred people. This country like others in Africa is the product of the conditions of a developing country. The development of a country is often bloody, however this does not does not justify the inhumane conditions the people in Nigeria are being subjected to. This battle only points out the flaws in both local and national governments. There is a lack of authority over the people and in their negotiation skills. This battle was supposedly started because there had been an order on July 16 that ordered the Ijaws to leaver the district claimed by the Itsekiris (New York Times).
