Moral Obligation and Poverty

Ethan Frome is a short novel written by Edith Wharton and published in 1911. One thing that sets Ethan Frome apart from other novels is the manner in which the story is told. Edith Wharton introduces the reader to a narrator, who remains nameless, and knows no more about Ethan Frome than the reader does. The story moves from the present day of the narrator to a time more than twenty years ago and back to the present day in the last chapter. The narrator tells the reader how he uncovers Ethan Frome’s story. He becomes a storyteller using his imagination to envision the life of Ethan.
