Frederic Ozanam was born in Milan, 1813, and grew up in Lyons in the south of France. At a young age Frederic questioned the Christian faith, but at 18 years of age he was defending it. While at school he made really good friends with one of his teachers Abbe` Noirot, who was also a priest and philosopher. Abbe` pointed him in the right direction, and taught him everything about religion and made him understand it. During a school debate, a challenge was thrown upon him: “You are Christian only in theory – show us your works!” Frederic’s answer was: “We shall go out and help the poor!” Frederic gathered six friends and together they went off on their challenge, planning and working out how they could help.
