René Francois Ghislain Magritte was a Belgian surrealist painter who excelled in using detailed realism to express thought provoking ideas. Although not understood during the Victorian time period, he uses ordinary everyday objects in his work which are taken for granted, and transforms the elements into allegorical symbols; taken past the literal face value to another level. His paintings challenge reality and give a new meaning to everyday life. Many factors contribute to the successes of his work including his childhood, his experiences, and his need to go beyond the literal.
Every aspect from Magritte’s childhood to his first occupation contributed to his painting career. René was born in the Victorian time period in 1898.
