A very powerful rockslide injured fourteen people at Yosemite National Park, and killed one. The rock itself was about four hundred feet wide and about twenty five thousand tons. It broke away from a sheer granite wall and fell twenty two thousand feet. The park remained open, despite the many complaints from campers and day visitors. The explosion caused a type of mini-hurricane that kicked up large amounts of dust and ash. This mini hurricane knocked over two thousand trees. People complained that the park had no emergency plan. One can imagine that this type of event rarely takes place, in our human timescale. Ironically, this is exactly how Yosemite was formed over billions of years, through rockslides and other natural catastrophes.
