It has been said that a superior work of literature is able to produce a healthy confusion in the reader. In Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov is able to create a feeling of pleasure and disquietude simultaneously, producing this “healthy confusion.”
Language is Nabokov’s key tool in producing this effect. The actions of the narrator, Humbert Humbert, are often immoral and sometimes grotesque, but Nabokov is able justify Humbert’s actions through his charming speech. Humbert’s beliefs and actions are delightfully sinful due to his likeable personality.
