Pausanias, traveler and author of Guide to Greece, defines a polis as a place having government offices, a gymnasium, a theatre, and agora, and a fountain. Athens contained all that and more. It contained all those elements in addition to life. The Acropolis was the heart of Athens. It had a myriad of functions encompassing its architecture. The buildings served religious, political, economic, and domestic functions that were very much a part of this matured polis.
