The Arabian Peninsula was a very unlikely birthplace for the first global civilization. However, Islam flourished and soon spread to the North, South, East and West. They established themselves in Iraq, Persia (now Iran), Palestine, North Africa, Spain, India, and Syria. Islam engulfed the Persian Sassanid Empire, and in subsequent waves of expansion, spread into central Asia, India, and Indonesia. The Muslims transmitted much of the knowledge of the ancient world, and helped lay the foundations for Western culture. Islam brought enlightenment and knowledge to the world in the sciences, medicine, physics, astronomy, geometry, algebra, mathematics, philosophy, architecture, etc.
