Marc Chagall, also spelled Shagall, was a Russian painter who was born on July 7, 1887, in a small Russian village called Vitebsk. A large part of his work contains memories and dreams of his childhood there. Chagall was not only a great painter. He also created twelve luminous stained glass windows depicting the tribes of Israel. The windows were exhibited at The Louvre in Paris and The Museum of Modern Art in New York before being installed in the synagogue of Hebrew University Medical School near Jerusalem in 1961. In 1964 he painted a new ceiling for the Paris Opera and in 1966 completed a pair of large murals for the opening of the new Metro-politan Opera House in New York City.
