Life and Accomplishments of Virginia Apgar

Virginia Apgar was born in 1909 and died in 1974. Her life was filled with many accomplishments, but she is most recognized for her advancements in newborn research.
Apgar graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1929 and then went on to earn her MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons from Columbia in 1933. After spending two years in a surgical internship, she decided to go into anesthesiology. In 1949, she was hired as the first full anesthesiology professor at Columbia. During her tenure as professor, she decided to give up her duties as head of the anesthesiology department, and turn to the full time study of anesthesia and it's role in childbirth.
