In The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway portrays many themes. Two quotes that Santiago states, is one theme Hemingway demonstrates. Santiago says, “Man is not made for defeat” and “a man can be destroyed but not defeated.” Hemingway discusses many heroic events, which also deal with manhood, throughout the novel.
