During the 1500-1600s colonization in America was an on and off pursuit of various countries in Europe. Spain had first discovered the Americas in 1492 when Columbus and his boats, the Santa, the Pinta and the Maria stumbled upon the great piece of land. Within a hundred years the Spanish had flourished in gold findings and had built prosperous farms, ranches and cities. They had made most Indians slaves and forced slave labour and Christianity among them. The Spanish had set up a system called the encomienda, which granted a Spanish occupant of land a certain number of Indian slaves.
