In “Porphyria’s Lover,” Robert Browning is revealing the identity of Porphyia’s lover. Browning does this through dramatic monologue, and setting. The essence of this speaker/protagonist’s identity is not as a human. There is anger in Porphyria’s lover. So much anger until he thinks he has no other choice but to kill her.
The cold, rainy night setting of this monologue projects pain. I like to consider rain as the ski crying. By Porphyria coming in from the rain, to her lover, allows the reader to fell that the relationship between Porphyria and her lover is full of anger that is disguised, just by the rainy setting.
