In the play, “The Glass Menagerie”, Tennessee Williams presents us with the story of an oppressed family living in the city of St. Louis, in the 1930's. The mother, Amanda, struggles endlessly in hopes of finding her shy, and crippled daughter, Laura, a stable future. Tom, the son, who has adventurous aspirations of being a merchant seaman is forced to put his dreams on hold as he is the family’s only form of financial support. As the story lingers on, the conditions change and become more unbearable. The characters struggle trying to cope and keep their sanity, in doing so they use their dreams and imagination as a form of escape from the true reality that is their lives.
