Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. Poe became an orphan at an early age when his mother, Elizabeth, died. He was currently about two years old. His father, David, had disappeared just before Elizabeth’s death. Frances Allan, and her husband John Allan, who was a tobacco exporter in Richmond, Virginia, raised Edgar as an orphan. Edgar spent about seven years with the Allan family and attended a boarding school in England. Edgar began to gamble while away at school. He was known, too, for a drinking addiction. Mr. Allan withdrew support within a year due to Poe's gambling debts.
