Rodney King was speeding down a Los Angeles highway. When traffic police tried to pull him over, he attempted to outrun them. Police eventually got him to pull over. The passenger in King’s car had been handcuffed, and was lying face down on the ground. A female officer tried to detain King, when another officer, Koon, told her that he would take it from there. Koon began by shooting King with a tazer twice. Koon would later testify that King did not stay down, but rather let out a noise like “a wild animal.” When King rose to his feet, another officer, Powell, administered what is known as a “power stroke” to King’s face, and then continued with such strokes in a back and forth motion.
