In the summer of 1992 the one of the worst droughts in recorded history struck eastern Africa. The American public was horrified when they saw the emaciated faces of Somali children on CNN. The United States felt it was their duty as the major world power to help the Somali people. In 1992 the Bush Administration sent 25,000 American troops in to Somalia. Most of these forces were of the Marine Corps. Most of the troops were concentrated in the Somali capital of Mogadishu. This overcrowded city was ran by a powerful warlord named Mohammed Farah Aidid.
