There are numerous types of chairs in the world today, all different styles to suit many different purposes. Just think of all the chairs we sit in on a daily basis: in the classroom, on public transportation, at home, etc. Many of us take for granted the importance of chairs in our everyday life and the considerations designers put into their creation. What do we feel as we sit in our favorite chair? Do we like it because it supports us, or because it consoles us? Do we feel alert or sleepy? These factors are important when it comes to good chair design. I am going to attempt to describe two different chairs; Gerrit Rietveld’s Red Blue Yellow Chair and Alvar Aalto’s Paimio Chair; as well as compare and contrast them.
