I, George Wythe, in 1726, was born unto Thomas and Margaret Wythe, the second of three children. My parents died while I was still at a very young age, which forced me to grow up in Virginia on my family’s plantation with my older brother Thomas as my main father figure. As a child, I went to the grammar school of William and Mary, but not for long. I received little formal education. When I was twenty, after studying law for a bit, I became a lawyer. A year later, in 1747, I married my partner’s sister, Ann Lewis, but sadly she passed away only a year later. In 1754, I was appointed to be the acting attorney general for a few months.
