I fly frequently and the events of September 11th have impacted my feeling of safety on airplanes. I feel somewhat that pilots have to be able to protect not only themselves, but also the passengers on board. However, in this paper I must argue that carrying guns in the cockpit will not solve the problem of feeling ‘safe’.
In the weeks after the attacks on the United States, airline pilots have called for “dead-bolt locks and mesh barricades ”(Hilkevitch 2001) to protect the cockpit from intruders. They demanded a new security policy. Some pilots want Congress to pass a law that will allow them to carry handguns into the cockpit.
