During the semester in class and in our reading of Mary Crow Dog’s Lakota Woman, a topic that highly caught my attention and highly interested me was the Sun Dance. This ritual caught my attention because of its importance to the Lakota people and the eccentricities that go into the planning of the ceremony. Although the Sun Dance was discussed in Crow Dog’s novel and in class, I decided to plunge a little deeper and learn more about the history, the characteristics and the crisis it underwent in the late 19th century.
The Sun Dance was originally a Lakota ceremony but now many tribes have their own distinct variations of it. The name for the Sun Dance, which is Wi-Wanayang-Wacipi, means sun gazing (Jorgensen 12). For the Native Am
