Karl Marx was born in the city of Trier in Rheinish Prussia, on May 5, 1818. He was born into a Jewish family, but they converted to Protestantism in 1824, so that his father could keep his job as one of the most respected lawyers in Trier. When Marx was seventeen, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Bonn. While attending the University, he became engaged to Jenny Von Westphalen, the daughter of a prominent member of Trier Society.
