“The great advantage of the Americans is, that they have arrived at a state of democracy without having to endure a democratic revolution; and that they are born equal, instead of becoming so.” - Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America.
Tocqueville writings may appear ignorant when (with the benefit of hindsight) there has been blatant discrimination on different groups of society since America gained independence in the late part of the 18th century. However, I use the word ‘hindsight’ due to the fact that at his time of writing America could have been seen as far more ‘liberal’, both politically and socially. In this essay I will try to shows arguments which would both support and contradict Tocquevilles claim.
