“The Cask of Amontillado” and Frankenstein both tell of men with perilous obsessions. Fortunato’s and Victor’s fixations ultimately lead to their demises.
In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor is able to lure Fortunato to the catacombs because of his desire for Amontillado. Fortunato prides himself in his knowledge of wine and he considers himself to be a connoisseur. Fortunato’s obsession is the Amontillado.
Montresor, on the other hand, is crazed with his need for revenge. He feels he has been seriously wronged and swears, “I must not only punish, but punish with impunity” (Poe 666). Montresor takes revenge on his friend Fortunato by luring him into the tunnels under the family estate. Montresor’s revenge is his obsession.
