Even though slaves were owned and controlled by there masters, they learned to acquire certain family and cultural values. It was said that the African, “though bought and sold by his masters, was better off then many free northern workers; he was, at least, cared for in his nonworking hours and old age by his master” (Taking sides, pg. 274).
