Phillis Wheatley Explication

Just a quick glance up to the heavens, one gets a feeling of awe and amazement. Phillis Wheatley’s poem, “An Hymn to the Evening” she captures the essence of the evening by illuminating certain events that had transpired. Wheatley came from West Africa in 1761. Her owner realizing her intelligence taught her to read and write. With this education, she had her first poem published when she was only thirteen. Wheatley’s text was probably the first to be published by an African American. With her description of the evening and night, Wheatley paints a picture of beauty, purity, and power of nature using figurative language and personification.
