The Abolitionist Movement-Frederick Douglass

On March 12, 1839 Frederick Douglass attended a meeting at the Christian Church of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Less than a year earlier, he had been a slave in Baltimore. The meeting had been called to denounce a proposal to send to colonize in Africa the free black people of Maryland. For the first time spoke out in public about what slavery was like and why the slaves should be set free in America. His comment attracted some attention. The abolitionist newspaper, "The Liberator," carried a notice of his comments. He met its editor, William Lloyd Garrison, a month later and was soon working as an abolitionist lecturer.
