ABSTRACT
This case study involves the comparison of the application of powder x-ray diffraction and single crystal x-ray diffraction. Although more so employed in laboratories a half a century ago, powder x-ray diffraction offers some utility in modern science and engineering fields including geology, chemistry, biology, and medicine. Single crystal x-ray diffraction, on the other, has become the preferred method of determining molecular conformation of crystals in modern times. One major application of single crystal x-ray diffraction is in the field of organic synthesis. Through the use of x-ray diffraction the structure of complex organic molecules, such as drug candidates, can be determined along with the structures these molecul
