John Updike’s Rabbit Run is the first in a series of novels staring Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom as the main character. The book takes place in the 60’s, a time of change in America the where middle class ideals and moral values of the country are changing everyday. Rabbits compulsive and aimless running away from responsibility coupled with his acceptance of the rapidly decaying American middle class ideals leads him nowhere on his quest to become a real man, as a result of this Updike creates a modern main character where Rabbit does not gain anything from his journey and leaves the reader feeling empty at the end of the novel.
Rabbit is a fitting name for this character, "he is always ready for flight when life threatens
