I am writing this essay on Harriet Tubman because she was a well-respected woman in United States history, white or black. I admire her because she helped over 300 slaves to Canada, where they became free. Since Harriet was a leader for all the slaves, she became known as the “Moses of her people.” During her 19 trips to the North, many runaway slaves lost faith and wanted to turn back. She forced them to continue at gunpoint. I admire her determination in trying to do all she could, just to make a person free.
Her forceful leadership led the white abolitionist John Brown to refer to her as “General” Tubman. She helped him to plan a raid on Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Only an illness kept her from fighting at Brown’s side during the rai
