Not far from the Atlantic coast , at the western edge of the Sahara Desert , lies an overlooked, understudied country called Mauritania. Mauritania is home to about 2,828,858 people. I had the pleasure of meeting, and interviewing one of them. His name is Sidi Mohamed Ould Elghassem . Sidi was born in June of 1976, just sixteen years after Mauritania became independent from France. Sidi left his homeland in January of 1994 so he could take advantage of one of the agents of socialization that is not offered in his country, an education. This is something I definitely was ethnocentristic about. I will admit I never thought about the fact that other cultures are not as fortunate as we are . Sidi actually had to leave behind his family unit
