Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948) was a great Hindu spiritual leader who was instrumental in India's fight for independence from Great Britain. Known as the "Mahatama," or "great soul," Gandhi was a man who advocated brotherhood for all under one God (Anonymous, 2002). His promotion of nonviolent resistance has influenced civil rights movements worldwide. Gandhi's life has been recorded in numerous biographies, and also in a 1982 awarding-winning film. The following analysis examines that film and its historical accuracy.
Director Richard Attenborough frames his film biography of Gandhi's assassination on January 3, 1948 by a young Hindu fanatic who was opposed to Gandhi's support of one India for both Hindus and Moslems. (Anonymous, 2002)
