Bracero Project
|
Labor migration from Mexico to the United States has been vital to the Mexican and United States economy. Between 1917 and 1929, Mexican immigrants in the United States sent an estimated average amount of $10 million a year to their families in Mexico. This time frame was the first unofficial Bracero Program between the two countries, a time when America was at war and the economy was booming. In 1929, Mexicans were deported home and the doors shut behind them.
Demand for migrant laborers strengthened with the onset of World War II. Mexican laborers crossing the border increased during this period. In August 1942, the U.S. and Mexican governments set forth conditions under which Mexican labor might be recruited for wartime employment.
