George Wallace began his life in Clio, Alabama on August 25, 1919(1). He grew up in a lower class family. He completed law school and soon after, fought in World War II. Wallace was elected governor of Alabama as a segregationist. He defied President Kennedy’s order to integrate and actively blocked black students out of the University of Alabama by standing in the doorway. In the latter years of his life, after he was shot in an assassination attempt, he rethought his racist form of appeasement for a more conservative anti-segregationists view.
