The Vietnam war was the longest lasting war the United States participated in. It began in 1957 and ended in 1975. A small country in Southeast Asia, Vietnam, was divided into the Communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam, North Vietnam, and the non-Communist Republic of Vietnam known as South Vietnam. North Vietnamese wanted to overthrow the government of South Vietnam and eventually reunite the country.
