Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology was not really a play. Rather, it was a dream. In the very beginning, the actors repeated, “Where is…sleeping, sleeping, sleeping on the hill.” which put the audience into a trance-like state. The set was simple, and the lighting was dim. The only set pieces were three small wooden benches set on the sides of the playing area. The stage house had two trees built around the outside of it.
There were only six actors, but the number of characters was almost uncountable. Each of the actors introduced themselves as a different person each time he or she spoke.
