Originally the US Constitution was formed to create unity between all states, but it soon became a source for sectional discord and tension that ultimately contributed to the failure of the union it had created. The Constitution became out of date to the modern troubles of the time. Thus creating very loose interpretations of the Constitution. This created many differences between the North and South states over the highly debated issue of slavery. Many compromises took place in order to make each side content over equality of power between free and slave states.
